Meet The Kings Of Spam
www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/08/05/tech/main517505.shtml

(AP) Tom Cowles, who heads one of the world's largest bulk e-mail, or spam, businesses, ought to be a happy guy.

By his account, his company makes $12 million a year e-mailing billions of advertisements, mainly to folks who don't want them.  It's an easy job, the way Cowles and others describe it:

"You get hired by a client who wants to sell a penile enlarger or an antenna booster. You write a zesty sales pitch. Then, with the help of some cloak-and-dagger software and a massive database of e-mail addresses, you deluge the planet. If one in a thousand recipients buys it, you're rich."

Who Sends Out Spam?

There are different groups of people that send unsolicited commercial email (spam). Some don't provide a real existing email address and a forged one with no opt-out removed from future mailings--because they don't want to receive zillions of complaints. sent to them.

The worse types are the ones that uses someone email address causing the ISP to shut down owner of that email address and receiving tons of "hate mail".

The lost "poor soul" are the ones' who isn't aware of the conventions of the web, buys a disk with millions of names and starts their own advertising campaign. These people are identifiable and will be shut down in a matter of hours and learned their first lesson--in the "school of hard knocks".

Most people purchase web server space from a provider which is shared with a few hundred others, therefore, if anyone of them start spamming, it clogs the server and slows down the service for everyone else. Hence, most servers have auto detect features and shuts down your account if the number of bounced emails (bounces) exceeds a certain quantity.

Professional spammers follows all the rules, and send out bulk mail on the behalf of others, using legitimate email address and provide opt-out from receiving future emails and charge a fee from 1 to 5 cents for each mail sent. Professional spamming is big business and involved a lot of money in equipment and operational cost--they have their own servers, dedicated high speed Internet line connection, don't go through any ISPs and are immune from shut-down.

Does this advert look familiar? Perhaps you are thinking of paying some company to do it? It's just another scam--take your money and you can't get your money back because you can't prove they didn't do it or if they did it, you still ends-up with all the (above) problems.

Thinking of bulk or mass emailing?

Let us assume that your business is genuine and you are thinking of mass or bulk email as another cheap form of sales marketing media. It is recommended that you should look into all the possible consequences (below) before considering bulk or mass emailing.

  • All ISP have anti-spam termination clauses therefore;
They can terminate an Internet access account or Website hosting account

  • Your company email domain can be blacklisted by International email servers

  • Your company email domain and mail server can get "mail bombed" until all regular emails are bounced

  • Your company email domain can be bombarded with viruses, Trojans, worms, bugs etc.

  • Company website get hacked and defaced

  • Home address and phone number all over the Web

  • Spammers tell of telephoned death threats or deer hearts received in the mail — the same scheme used to intimidate abortion doctors.

  • Target of a stalker who has created a Web site larded with pictures of your home

  • Company fax machine receiving non-stop junk faxes

  • Company phone receiving non-stop junk callers

  • Company email domain bombarded with junk attachment files non stop for the next 100 hours

  • Company email domain and URL's get posted in worldwide anti-spam newsgroup (Not a good method to get plenty of hits)

  • Company gets non-stop junk enquires

  • Company attract fraudulent credit card purchase until the merchant account is terminated

  • Having to deal with fraudulent purchasers and bounced payment

  • Company email domain being counter spammed

  • Company risk being prosecuted, litigations/lawsuits

  • The spammer gets "fired" (if working for a company)

  • Imagine getting 30% to 40% returned undeliverable email out of 100,000 messages sent plus all the counter-junks mails.

  • You don't need rocket science to figure out that you need powerful mail server system and strong ISP backbone support--if you don't have that kind of support, your Internet account will most likely be terminated by now.

  • Since buyers can't get through to you, what is the use of sending them out in the first place?

  • Imagine sending 100,000 spam mails and getting all the above at the same time, if you are working for a company and spamming without permission--thinking that it is just another method of sales marketing media--start looking for a new job. If you have permission to do it (get it in writing) you will end-up being the scrape-goat anyway.

Every email sent-out, are always generated from a real computer from which it was sent and can be traced. What ever cloaking method being used, since the objective is to sell something, it always leads to the originator (the seller).

Unless, you are a professional wheeler Dealer and can afford to spend 97% of the time; keep changing email accounts, hosting accounts, merchant accounts, bank accounts, company name, running, hiding, and a retainer legal attorney. You don't need to be like lost "poor soul" and learned your lessons from the "school of hard knocks".
